Free Tax Filing: IRS Direct File Program

  •

The IRS announced tax season will begin this Monday, January 27th.

On Monday the IRS will open their Direct File program for taxpayers in 25 states -- including Pennsylvania. Direct File allows eligible taxpayers to file directly with the IRS for free. Additional eligible states include: Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington State, Wyoming, Alaska, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Wisconsin.

This program is said to be similar to a commercial tax software -- where the user is guided through the return process step-by-step through a series of questions along with data import tools to allow the uploading of documents and other tax information. Direct File is a web-based service that works on mobile phones, laptops, tablets, or desktop computers. This process also offers a live chat with IRS customer representatives to help the user with any additional questions that arise. This service is available in both English and Spanish.

Direct File covers various tax situations, such as:

  • Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Credit for other Dependents
  • Premium Tax Credit
  • Credit for the Elderly and Disabled
  • Retirement Savings Contribution Credits

Not only will Direct File cover taxpayers claiming the standard deduction and deductions for student loan interest and educator expenses, but it will support taxpayers claiming deductions for Health Savings Accounts (HSA) as well.

A Direct File eligibility questionnaire is available here. Read more about the Direct File program on the IRS's website and in their recent news release.
